California Day Camp 2017 at Avid4 Adventure

As an Avid4 Adventure Day Camp Instructor, you have the amazing responsibility of inspiring kids to lead active outdoor lifestyles. Our Adventure Instructors lead 2nd-7th grade campers and our Explorer Instructors lead K-1st grade campers. Discovery Instructors are responsible for leading our 3 & 4 year old campers.

Multi-sport Camps: During a week of multi-sport, instructor pairs guide campers through one adventure activity each day which can include: climbing or stand-up paddleboarding, mountain biking, hiking, canoeing and kayaking. On rock climbing and mountain biking days, instructors will partner with Specialist Instructors, who have advanced skills in each adventure sport.

Single Sport Camps: Instructors facilitating single-sport programs work with campers on one of our core sports for the entire week, including kayaking, SUPing, survival skills, rock climbing and mountain biking. Activities take place on and off-site, depending on program and camp location.

Staff should be confident in this age range’s needs and stages of development. You will be responsible for helping campers build confidence and comfort with outdoor activities, facilitating teamwork, engaging campers both during and after activities and maintaining a safety-oriented environment.

As a Day Camp Instructor, you will become part of a team of outdoor professionals who receives support and mentorship from our camp leaders, grow their teaching skills, and enjoy a community of peers who live the values our camps teach. The ideal candidates are detail oriented, highly organized, and ready for action. Just as important, being an Avid4 Adventure Day Camp Instructor means being ready to inspire youth to live an active, outdoor lifestyle and have a summer full of fun!

All Day Camp Instructor applicants will complete a general online application. During the interview process, we will determine which type of day camp and role is the best fit with your background and preferences.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Provide age and developmentally- appropriate instruction in mountain biking, rock climbing, kayaking, SUPing, Leave No Trace principles and team building.
  • Transport campers in 15 passenger van and trailer.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to parents and all participants in our programs.
  • Serve as a role model for campers in appropriate behavior, language, attitudes and activities.
  • Provide guidance, supervision, safety and comfort for participants during all activities.
  • Thoroughly understand emergency action plans and help implement procedures if necessary.
  • Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of equipment, and report any damages to Camp Director.
  • Maintain excellent communication between campers, parents, and staff.
  • Participate in staff meetings and program meetings.
  • Take an active role in the continual evaluation of campers, programs, and staff.
  • Adhere to all of the policies and procedures of the American Camp Association.
  • Other duties as requested by the Camp Director.

Job Requirements:

  • Minimum age to apply is 19 years old. Due to insurance and driver needs, many of our new staff will need to be over 21 years old.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Personal experience in at least 1 of the following sports: climbing, biking, kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddle boarding, survival skills or outdoor education.
  • Experience leading youth and have a passion for working with kids.
  • First Aid certification:
    • Wilderness First Aid (or higher) is required for most Avid instructors. Instructors working only with our youngest campers only need Community/Basic First Aid, but are encouraged to obtain WFA in order to fill in for older camper age groups. Wilderness medical certifications must be delivered by a nationally recognized organization (SOLO, WMI, WMA, Aerie, etc.). Do we pay for your WFA certification? YES! To pay for this cert, we increase your hourly pay by $0.50. So, over the course of a summer, you will earn approximately $200 to cover the cost of this incredibly useful certification.
  • CPR Certification:
    • American Red Cross or American Heart Association prior to camp start date (CANNOT be a 100% online course). Avid4 will offer CPR classes for anyone who needs it prior to all staff training. Avid4 does not pay for the time or cost of this certification. We organize this to ease the stress of finding a course.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • High levels of organization, communication, and judgment.

*Avid4 Adventure requires that some California Instructors obtain a commercial driver’s license in order to transport campers to and from recreational areas in 15-passenger vans. Obtaining a CDL requires a specific CDL physical and passing two tests at the DMV (written and driving). The fee for both tests will be reimbursed by Avid4 Adventure. You will also receive an increase in your hourly rate upon obtaining a CDL. We will discuss this option with you as part of the interview process.

Typical Physical Demands & Working Environment:

  • Course set-up, facilitation and take down is physically demanding requiring lifting and moving of heavy elements, setting up industrial type elements (such as portable climbing walls) that have large moving parts.
  • Outdoor activities require ability to bike, hike, climb and kayak at a level that affords an appropriate margin of comfort while instructing students.

Mandatory Training Dates:

  • California Day Camps training will take place regionally in the Bay Area in early June (specific training dates still TBD).
  • The training wage is minimum wage in the geographic location in which the training occurs. For training days where a certification is received, whether a 3rd party certification (i.e. Red Cross Small Craft Safety) OR an Avid4 certification that can be marketed with future employers, employees receive the certification but not additional pay.

Typical Camp Schedule: 39.25 hours/week. Monday 7:30 am - 3:45 pm; Tuesday - Friday 8:00 am - 3:45 pm.

Camp dates vary by location and begin as early as 6/13/16 and end 8/12/16. You will have the chance to indicate your availability and location preference on our online application.
